GLOSSARY

Many of our products use technical fabrics and include performance features which may need further explanation. We have tried to provide this for some of the key fabrics and features below.

3 in 1

3 in 1 products include a removable inner jacket which can be worn separately for additional versatility and adaptability to changing weather conditions.

Base Layer

This layer is made of quick wicking fabrics which quickly transport moisture away from the body to the mid layer keeping you dry and comfortable. This layer provides you with warmth without weight and freedom of movement. TOG 24 use Supplex® and Polartec® Powerdry®.

Breathability

Breathable fabrics allow moisture produced by the body to pass through them to the outside- again helping to keep you dry and comfortable. Breathable garments are essential for active use such as walking and skiing.

DWR

Durable Water Repellent. This is a  chemical finish which is applied to fabrics to repel water. This coating causes water to ‘bead’ on the surface of the fabric and help to maintain comfort levels and improve drying times.

Interactive

Interactive jackets feature an additional zip which allows an additional layer (such as a fleece) to be zipped in for maximum protection from the elements. This system provides excellent flexibility-  perfect for rapidly changing weather conditions.

Merino

A high performance natural wool perfect for active use. TOG 24 products utilising Merino are comfortable, provide ‘natural air conditioning’, and move moisture away from the body keeping you dry. They are also odour resistant and easy care.

Mid Layer

This layer provides insulation and also helps to move moisture away from the body to the outer layer. This layer should be lightweight, very breathable and non-restrictive. TOG 24 use Polartec® Powerstretch® and WINDSTOPPER® fabrics.

Outer Layer

This layer protects you from the elements and transfers moisture to the outside. The material should be waterproof, windproof, breathable and have fully heat sealed seams. TOG 24 use Milatex™ and GORE-TEX® fabrics.

Storm Flap

A storm flap is a piece of fabric which covers a zip on a performance garment- preventing the entry of water and helping to keep you dry and comfortable.

Waterproof

Waterproof fabrics prevent water from getting through them even under pressure. The European Standard dictates that a waterproof fabric must have a hydrostatic head of 1.5 meters.

Wicking

Wicking fabrics transport moisture away from the body. This is essential for clothing worn next to the skin during active use.

Windproof

Wind chill can make you feel very cold very quickly. Windproof garments help to cut down the wind chill effect by preventing the wind from disturbing the layer of insulating air underneath your garments- helping to keep you warm and comfortable.

SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING GUIDE

With the advent of cheap flights with budget airlines, going skiing and snowboarding to resorts in France, Austria, Italy and further afield has never been easier. Days outside under blue sky is what our brand is all about- discovering the freedom of the great outdoors.

However, skiing and snowboarding holidays are still not cheap- and to ensure that you enjoy yourself as much as possible it’s important to choose gear which is great value for money and will really do the job. This is exactly what we offer both online and in out 45 stores nationwide. A ‘cheap’ ski jacket and salopettes could end up spoiling an expensive holiday- clothing is an area it really pays not to cut back on. Low cost does not necessarily equal good value! In fact if you end up having to buy a new jacket in a resort ‘cheap’ ski clothing could end up being anything but!

If you haven’t been skiing before, or haven’t been for a while you may find the information below useful. Get the right kit and ensure you get every penny of enjoyment out of your skiing or snowboarding holiday.

What clothing do I need to go skiing or snowboarding?

  1. A good quality technical ski jacket. This should be either snowproof or waterproof.
  2. Good quality salopettes or ski trousers. Again, these should be either snowproof or waterproof.
  3. A fleece mid layer. We have a wide range of quality fleece mid layers which help to keep you dry and comfortable. We use some of the leading fabric brands including Polartec.®.
  4. A selection of good quality, wicking thermal base layers. A mistake often made is wearing a standard t-shirt as a base layer. This will make you cold and wet- as normal t-shirts do not help to move moisture away from your body. Good quality thermal base layers are critical.
  5. Technical gloves. We offer a wide range of different gloves at a selection of price points- from great value entry level gloves, to top of the range gloves in GORE-TEX® fabric.
  6. A good quality warm hat. Choose from our large selection of headwear. Most of your body heat is lost from your head- so again good headwear is very important.
  7. Plenty of warm specially designed ski socks. Again using normal socks will result in cold, wet feet!
  8. Winter footwear. Go for a good quality boot, preferably insulated, with a specially designed Winter sole for added traction. We offer a range of HI-TEC Winter footwear which performs extremely well in cold conditions.
  9. Goggles- very important especially in snow.
  10. If you are likely to be out on the slopes for extended periods, it is worth buying a backpack with essentials such as water, snacks, goggles etc. Sunscreen is important as the sun reflects off the snow- it’s easy to get burnt so don’t forget this.
  11. Warm apres ski clothing!
  12. A large roller bag or other form of luggage to get your kit to the airport and from your transport to the chalet.
